    Dr. Kim received a new research grant for Basic Research Laboratory Program (한국연구재단 기초연구실 후속연구 지원사업) entitled "Biomaterial-mediated in situ Cell Surface Engineering for NK-Cancer Immune Interaction" as a principle investigator. Our new project will be supported for the next 3 years.

    Her team will be working on "Simultaneous Targeting of Pancreatic and Breast Cancer via Biomaterials for NK Cell Surface Engineering."

    Mr. Sungjun Kim won the Silver Prize in Bio Engineering & Life Science Division at the 30th Samsung Humantech Paper Award (삼성휴먼테크논문대상)

    He received the award in the topic of recognizing his excellent research on "Surface Engineering of Natural Killer Cells with CD44-targeting Ligands for Augmented Cancer Immunotherapy." He is the first recipient from Dongguk University to receive this award for two consecutive years.

    Dr. Kim awarded a prize the Damyeon Mid-career Research Award (한국생물공학회 담연학술상) at 2023 Korean Society for Biotechnology and Bioengineering (KSBB).

    This prize awards researchers in the biotechnology field under the age of 45. He received this award in recognition of his research achievements, including the publication of approximately 90 international SCI papers to date in the field of biomaterials and cell engineering.

His research entitled "Biomaterial-based Ex vivo Natural Killer Cell Surface Engineering for Enhanced Cancer Immunotherapy" was nominated as an outstanding contribution to the SFB 2023 annual meeting.

    Dr. Ashok Kumar Jangid's work about "Ex vivo surface engineering of NK cells using pheylbotonic acid-based biomaterial for augmented cancer immunotherapy" received the Best Academic Award at 2023 spring meeting of the Korean Society for Biomaterials (KSBM).

    Ms. Heewon Park's work about "Surface engineering of NK cells to increase recognition and boost immunotherapy efficacy agatinst solid tumor" received the Outstanding Paper Presentation Award at 2023 spring meeting of KSBM.

    Mr. Sehwan Jeong's work about "Enhanced anticancer efficacy of natural killer cells via surface-decorated quantum dots using PD-1 binding peptides" received the Academic Excellence Award at 2023 spring meeting of KSBM.

    Mr. Sungjun Kim won the Bronze Prize in Bio Engineering & Life Science Division at the 29th Samsung Humantech Paper Award (삼성휴먼테크논문대상)

    In recognition of his excellent research about "Biomaterial-based Ex vivo Natural Killer Cell Surface Engineering for Enhanced Cancer Immunotherapy", he became Dongguk University's first recipient of the award in that field.

    Our collaboratory work with Indian researchers (including a former lab member Dr. Gajendiran) was published in Journal of Molecular Structure (Title: Ferrocenylimine-based homoleptic metal(II) complexes: Theoretical, biocompatibility, in vitro anti-proliferative, and in silico molecular docking and pharmacokinetics studies).

    Dr. Kim awarded a 1,375 million KRW research grant for Basic Research Laboratory entitled "Biomaterial-mediated ex vivo cell surface engineering for enhanced cancer immuno therapy" as a principle investigator. For the next 33 months, our team will investigate surface engineered natural killer cells for allogenic cellular immuno-cancer therapeutic products. Please check this out.

    Ms. Wonjeong Lee and Mr. Sehwan Jeong joined C-TEAM Lab through Bachelor-Master integrated cources. Mr. Jeong will investigate exogenous cytokine delivery for natural killer cell activation and Ms. Lee will develop a dual photothermal & photodynamic anticancer therapeutics using composite IPN hydrogels.

    One more 100 citation! One of Dr. Kim's very first publication ("Nanoparticle technology in bone tissue engineering" Journal of Drug Targeting, 2007) exceeded 100 citations in Google Scholar. This review article summarized the particle-based engineering techniqes for develpment of novel bone tissue engineering applications.

His research about exosome-mediated intercellular signaling (Title: Exosome-mediated Bidirectional Signaling between Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Chondrocytes for Enhanced Chondrogenesis) highlights a potential medical usage of stem cell-dereived exosomes for cartilage tissue repair.     Ms. Hyeran Cho's manuscript for cartilage repair was just accepted to Journal of Controlled Release  (IF 7.727, JCR Top 5%) (Title: Dual Delivery of Stem Cells and Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 in Coacervate-embedded Composite Hydrogels for Enhanced Cartilage Regeneration in Osteochondral Defects). Our research will be featured for the development of 3D composite hydrogel systems for the repair of damaged knee cartilage tissues.

    Mr. Uiseon Park's manuscript for skin scar reduction was just accepted to Acta Biomaterialia (IF 6.383) (Title: Coacervate-mediated Exogenous Growth Factor Delivery for Scarless Skin Regeneration). This research investigates the therapeutic efficacy of exogenous growth factor administration to improve the quantity & quality of damaged skin tissue, especially for reducing scars during wound healing.

This research is now followed by our current project to develop coacervate-embedded composite hydrogel system for cartilage repair.

The 1st international MOU in Division of Bioengineering, INU was successfully completed! The MOU signing was also featured in news articles.

    Dr. Mani Gajendiran's manuscript about a novel nanoconjugate system for anti-cancer drug delivery was just accepted to ACS Biomacromolecules (Title: Development of Folate Decorated Di- (or)Tricarboxylate-PEG-Gold Nanoconjugates for in vitro Anti-breast Cancer Activity). We have developed a polymer/nanoparticle combined delivery platform for a efficient delivery of 5-FU chemical drug, specifically for a breast cancer treatment. Mr. Kim's research investigates a skull bone regeneration using interpenetrating (IPN) composite hydrogels containing polycation-based coacervates for bioactive growth factor delivery (Title: Sustained Release of Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 using Gelatin-PEGDA Composite Hydrogel Enhanced Skull Bone Regeneration). This study has been performed by a collaboration with Dr. Byung-Jae Kang (Kangwon National University, School of Veterinary Medicine). Many congrats to Sungjun!

This study investigated how intrinsic construction parameters could facilitate osteogenic potentials of a progenitor cell population in 3D culture systems. .

This study investigated how to modulate stem cell fates via controlling intrinsic physico-chemical properties of implantable scaffold biomaterials.

This new research project will focus on the development of tissue engineered composite hydrogel for guided skull bone regeneration in craniofacial bone regions.

    Our group received a research grant via a collaboration with Dr. Jonghoon Choi (Chung-Ang Univ.) and Dr. Hyung Joon Koo (Seoul Nat'l Univ. of Sci. & Tech.) from National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) funded by the Ministry of Science and ICT. This new research project (Title: Development of Lectin-Janus nanoparticles for the detection of pancreatic cancer cell secreted exosomes) will be continued for the next 2 years to develop a nano-bio diagnostic platform for pancreatic cancer-specific exosomes.

    Our postdoc Dr. Mani Gajendiran received a best poster award in 2017 Fall Meeting of the Korean Society for Biomaterials. One of his current researches focuses on the development of gold nano-conjugate delivery system for a controlled release of anti-cancer drugs via folate-thioglycolate and citric acid PEG hyper branched polymer.

This research is supported by X-mind Corps program of National Research Foundation (NRF) of Korea funded by the Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Plannig (NRF-2017H1D8A1029391). We will develop a hydrogel-based bone tissue engineering application for the guided bone regeneration using rat calvarial (i.e., skull) model.

She will conduct a research about development of composite hydrogel system for cartilage tissue regeneration via cell/growth factor delivery. Other capstone students, Aerie Lee and Jiwon Jung, will also support this research project.

     Hyeyoung Kim will leave to the USA in July for pursuing her Ph.D training at the Department of Molecular Biosciences (Microbiology program), University of Kansas.     Dr. Kim's review paper about the development of polycation-based biomedical applications was published in one of the most prestigious journals in a filed of polymer science, "Progress in Polymer Scinece" (IF 26.383), in collaboration with Dr. Y.
